# Live Hazards MCP

The Live Hazards MCP server connects the AI assistant you already use (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) to DisasterAWARE's live hazard feed: every active hazard worldwide, with its official warning text, its footprint, and the people and assets exposed. You ask in plain language; the assistant finds, ranks, screens and summarises the live picture and tells you how fresh it is.

Server address: `https://mcp.disasteraware.com/active-hazards`

It is the live companion of the [Historical Hazards MCP](/mcp-server/historical-hazards-mcp.md) server. Add both and your assistant can answer "what is happening now" and "what happened here before" in one conversation.

## What's in the live feed

* Every active hazard DisasterAWARE tracks, worldwide, about 1,000 at any time across some 20 hazard types: floods, wildfires, tropical cyclones, severe weather, high wind, winter storms, extreme temperatures, earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, drought, marine and surf hazards, disease outbreaks and smoke, and security incidents.
* For each hazard: the official headline, description and instruction, who issued it, how urgent and how certain it is, when it started, was last updated, and when it is expected to end or expire.
* The official alert footprint (the warning polygon) for almost every record, and the modelled exposure inside it: population by age group, households, hospitals, schools and capital value, by country and administrative area.
* The state, province or region each footprint touches — California and Nevada for a wildfire on the border, for example — derived from the footprint itself, using the same region codes the [Historical Hazards MCP](/mcp-server/historical-hazards-mcp.md) uses. So "hazards in California" works the same way on both servers.
* The feed is regenerated every few minutes. Every answer states the time of the feed it came from, and says so plainly if the feed is older than it should be.

What it does not hold: hazards that have ended (they leave the feed; the [Historical Hazards MCP](/mcp-server/historical-hazards-mcp.md) holds the archive), and the measurements gathered after an event (gauge crests, damage surveys, burned acres), which arrive with the historical enhancement.

## Before you start

Your DisasterAWARE account needs a specific access role for the MCP servers, separate from DisasterAWARE web or API access. The same role covers both the Live and the Historical server, so if you already use one, you can add the other without a new permission.

{% hint style="warning" %}
If your assistant signs in but every question is refused as not authorized, that role is missing. Ask your DisasterAWARE account administrator or PDC account representative to add it, then reconnect.
{% endhint %}

## Connect your assistant

Add the server address as a remote MCP server or custom connector, then sign in with your DisasterAWARE account on the page that opens:

```
https://mcp.disasteraware.com/active-hazards
```

In Claude Code that is one command:

```
claude mcp add --transport http disasteraware-live https://mcp.disasteraware.com/active-hazards
```

For Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other clients the steps are identical to the Historical Hazards server — see [Connect your assistant](/mcp-server/historical-hazards-mcp.md#connect-your-assistant) on that page and substitute the live address above.

## What the assistant can do (the tools)

You never call these yourself; knowing they exist helps you ask better questions.

| Tool                       | What it answers                                                                                                                                                                                  |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `get_live_coverage` | What the feed holds right now: counts by type and severity, how fresh it is. Start here. |
| `query_active_hazards` | Find active hazards by type, severity, country, admin area, name, map window, distance from a point, time started or updated, people exposed; ranked any way you like. |
| `hazards_at_locations` | Screen your own list of sites, a route or an area (as coordinates or GeoJSON) against every active footprint: which hazards intersect each location, worst first, or how far the nearest one is. |
| `get_active_hazard` | One hazard in full: official text, issuer, timing, exposure by country and admin area, footprint extent, with a download link for the complete record. |
| `active_hazard_changes` | What is new and what was updated since a time ("since 06:00", "in the last 2 hours"). |
| `aggregate_active_hazards` | Counts and exposure totals by type, severity, country, urgency, certainty or issuer, for rankings and summaries. |

## Example questions

### Right now, anywhere

* What is happening in the world right now, by hazard type and severity?
* What is the biggest active hazard by people exposed?
* Which countries have the most active Warnings?
* Any volcano, earthquake or tsunami activity in the last 6 hours?
* Which wildfires are threatening hospitals right now?
* How many people are under flood warnings in Vietnam?
* List every active tropical cyclone and the countries it exposes.

### At a place

* Is anything active within 25 km of this location?
* What does the official warning covering Manila say I should do?
* How long has this warning been in force, and when does it expire?
* Which of these 40 ports are inside an active cyclone, high-surf or marine advisory? (paste the list)
* Buffer this shipping lane by 50 km: is anything active along it?
* Which of our tier-1 supplier sites are inside an active hazard, worst first? (paste the sites)

### What changed

* What changed in the last hour?
* Summarise every new Warning in Southeast Asia since this morning.
* Which hazards were updated today in Japan?

### Live and history together (both servers connected)

* A Category 3 cyclone is near Luzon now: what did the last storm this strong do there?
* This flood warning covers Houston: how often has this area had floods this severe, and when?
* How does this week's warning count in Texas compare with the same week last year?

This guide describes the server as of October 2026.

## Tips for accurate answers

* **Start with coverage.** "What is in the live feed right now?" tells the assistant what it is working with and how fresh it is.
* **Records are alerts.** One real event can produce several records (one warning per office or county), so counts describe alerting; ask for "the biggest" or "the worst" rather than "how many storms".
* **Exposure is modelled.** People, hospitals and capital figures are estimates for the footprint, not observed impacts.
* **Give coordinates for your sites.** A list of names with latitude and longitude, or a GeoJSON line or polygon, is screened exactly; a place name alone is matched against the feed's country and admin names.
* **Ended hazards are not here.** If a hazard you expect is missing, it may have ended; ask the [Historical Hazards MCP](/mcp-server/historical-hazards-mcp.md).
* **Check the time.** Every answer carries the feed time; if the assistant reports a stale feed, treat the answer as of that time.

## Troubleshooting

* *Sign-in works but questions are refused:* the MCP access role is missing from your account; see "Before you start".
* *"Source unavailable":* the live feed could not be read at that moment; this is not "no hazards". Ask again in a minute.
* *Answers seem old:* ask for the feed coverage; the `as_of` time and a stale flag say how current the loaded feed is.
