Marine Sample
This page provides a complete sample response for a marine hazard from the Active Hazards API endpoint. Marine hazards are coastal and offshore weather warnings — special marine warnings, gale and storm warnings for marine zones — issued by national meteorological services under the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP). The sample below is an Environment Canada special marine warning for waters north of Tuktoyaktuk.
Marine-Specific Properties
Incident Data
The incident.properties object for a marine hazard contains standard CAP alert metadata. Key incident properties include:
senderName / sender - Issuing agency (e.g., "Environment Canada") and CAP sender address
event - Event type name (e.g., "Special Marine")
headline / headlineDescription - Alert headline and combined headline-plus-description text
description - Detailed alert text
severity / urgency / certainty - CAP classification values. Multi-valued alerts join them with commas (e.g., "Immediate, Past")
effective / onset / expires - ISO 8601 alert window
sent - Send time in epoch milliseconds
msgType / status / scope / category - CAP message metadata
identifier / references - CAP identifier and a JSON string listing the prior messages this alert updates
eventCode / code - CAP event codes as a JSON string, and the CAP profile code
note - Free-text service notices from the issuer, when present
language / audience / contact / web / resource / parameter / area - Remaining CAP fields, frequently null or "null"
Features
The features collection contains EXPOSURE_AREA polygons (one per severity zone, e.g. LIMITED and MODERATE) and a SMART_ALERT polygon. The features collection carries metadata, incidentType, and sourceId at collection level alongside type and features, and each feature's geometry object embeds a copy of the feature's properties. See Feature collections.
Exposure Areas
Marine hazards use up to two exposure levels representing the source-provided marine zones:
Level 0: LIMITED - outer zone
Level 1: MODERATE - core zone
Because marine zones are offshore, exposureAssessment population totals are frequently zero, as in this sample; the block is still present.
Source
source is null on this record; the issuer is identified in incident.properties.senderName.
Sample Response
Note: Coordinate arrays have been replaced with [...] for brevity. In actual API responses, these properties contain complete GeoJSON coordinate arrays. Long text fields have been truncated. All other values are verbatim from the production API as of 2026-09-11.
