# Hail Sample

This page provides a complete sample response for a live hail hazard from the [`/hail`](/hazards/requesting-hail.md) endpoint. Hail hazards are DisasterAWARE hazards of type `STORM` with `incident.properties.subType` of `HAIL`, built from NWS severe thunderstorm warnings carrying a hail tag, MRMS radar hail swaths, and ground hail reports. The record below is a real hazard from the convective day of 2026-10-22, in Santa Cruz County, Arizona: a reported 3.00 inch stone with a 2.66 inch radar estimate, one linked warning, and all six radar exposure levels.

These hazards are returned by the [`/hail`](/hazards/requesting-hail.md) endpoint, which requires a specific role for hail feed access on your credentials.

## What makes this hazard

**Basis.** `hailAssessment.hail_basis` is `report` — the strongest evidence behind the hazard. `report` means at least one ground report, `radar` means a radar hail signature of an inch or more, and `warning` means only an NWS warning with a hail tag. **Size.** `best_estimate_in` is 3.0 from `report`: the larger of the biggest ground report (3.0 in) and the radar peak (2.66 in). The warning itself was tagged 1.75 in.

**Exposure levels.** `exposureAreas` carries one Feature per radar size threshold reached — six here. `hailAssessment.exposure_levels` maps each level to its inch threshold, so a consumer can label the swaths without hard-coding the scale.

**Lifecycle.** This is an ended record as held in history: `end_basis` is `warning_expired`, `incident.properties.endedAtKind` is `observed` and `isExpired` is `true`. While a hazard is active, `endedAt` is a projection, `endedAtKind` is `projected` and `end_basis` is `null`.

Coordinate arrays have been replaced with `[...]` for brevity; in actual API responses they contain complete GeoJSON coordinate arrays. Repeated array entries — reports, warnings, radar frames and timeline steps — are shown as the first entry followed by `"..."`, and long text fields are truncated. Every `exposureAreas` Feature is shown, since the levels are the point of the record. `exposureAssessment` is `{}` on both of these records: the live hail and wind feeds carry the observed footprint in `exposureAreas` rather than a population and capital assessment. Every other value is verbatim from a live record of 2026-10-22.
